On Wednesday 30th January I took six boys from year 5/6 to Gateshead Leisure Centre to compete in the annual 5 A-side tournament. Last weeks half of the draw was postponed due to the snow so we had the chance to become overall winners of the tournament.
We were drawn in a group A with Front Street, Clover Hill and Rowlands Gill. I really fancied us to win our group and progress to the final. The boys did not disappoint and they did exactly that. We played some fantastic one touch football in the opening three games and managed to score ten goals and concede none. I was refereeing all the games on our court and was left purring at the skills on show from our school. We scored some fantastic goals, with one twos, some great finishing and the boys worked so hard as a team for each other.
We won our group convincingly and moved on to play Fellside who had won group B. I had refereed Fellside and thought our boys could beat them. I said to the boys before we started that I wanted them to go on and win the game and get themselves a winners trophy to take home, as it was going to be all of their last 5 A-side tournament at this school apart from our outstanding goalkeeper Jake who is in year 5.
We went 1-0 up in the game, but unfortunately conceded two quick goals right at the end of the game. I think tiredness had set in and also our boys had sat about waiting for the other group to finish. Fellside just went straight in to the game from a previous group game and had a bit of the momentum with them in closing stages. I really felt for our boys because the were first class and played some fantastic football. All the boys received a runners up trophy, which was brilliant but we all wish it would of been winners trophies. Again they made me very proud to be involved and be their coach and teacher.
